Sheung Wan, the 'in-between' district that isn't really Central but not Sai Ying Pun either. Everything is a little harder to find, but trust me, some of the best restaurants are located here! For a comprehensive list of my favourite / highly recommended restaurants in Central, click here. Here for Causeway Bay and here for Hung Hom. As with all the neighborhood guides, the list is constantly being updated.

Sang Kee Congee $
One of the quintessential Hong Kong restaurants that have been around since the 80's (initially starting as a dai pai dong). They do a bomb carp belly congee base, and a crab congee that's so coveted it's usually sold out by lunchtime.
Cuisine: Hong Kong, congee
Tel: +852 2811 8103 Address: G/F, 7-9 Burd Street Sheung Wan (6.30am-9pm)
Kau Kee $
You might recall that restaurant with the line snaking out the front on Gough Street. That's for Kau Kee's famous beef brisket noodles, created in the nostalgic Hong Kong style. Another good dish is the curry beef noodles.
Cuisine: Hong Kong, noodles
Tel: +852 2850 5967
Address: G/F 21 Gough Street, Central (6-min walk from Sheung Wan MTR E1)
Sing Heung Yuen $
Super local teahouse. Come here for a hearty bowl of Hong Kong-style tomato soup noodles (or macaroni) with egg and beef. They also serve up some local favourites like peanut milk toast, and crispy Kaya toast.
Cuisine: Hong Kong, dai pai dong
Tel: +852 2544 8368
Address: 2 Mee Lun Street, Central / Sheung Wan
Kwan Kee Claypot Rice $
This place is honestly the best for crisp-burnt claypot rice (chicken and Chinese sausage is my favourite) and pork bone soup. The rice is charcoal-cooked, so has this lovely smoky flavour to it.
Cuisine: Hong Kong, dai pai dong, claypot
Tel: +852 2803 7209 Address: Shop 1, Wo Yick Mansion, 263 Queen's Road West, Sai Ying Pun, Western District
Pica Pica $$
I heard mixed reviews about this place but I personally really enjoyed it. The black squid ink paella rice with crisp bottom was ace, as was the Spanish lazy omelette and pata negra ham. Next time I have to try the famous Josper-grilled prawn head squeezed over a hot dog! Nice open-air vibe with counter & table seats.
Cuisine: Spanish, tapas
Tel: +852 2811 9880 Address: Shop G-H, G/F, Kai Tak Commercial Building, 317-321 Des Voeux Road Central, Sheung Wan
ChaChaWan $$
Tasty traditional Thai restaurant with a super cosy neighborhood feel. They specialise in grilled meat skewers, but also do traditional dishes like laab (minced pork), Thai omelette and phad thai.
Cuisine: Thai Tel: +852 2549 0020 Address: G/F, 206 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan
Duecento Otto $$
Rustic Italian restaurant with great pastas and Neapolitan-style pizzas which use buffalo mozzarella from Campagna, and are baked in a custom oven imported from Naples.
Cuisine: Italian
Tel: 208 Hollywood Rd, Tai Ping Shan
Address: +852 2549 0208
TMK $$
If you love the rather unlikely pairing of sushi and punk rock music, this is where to go! TMK is styled after a modern izakaya, with loud music, extensive sake menu and sushi counters serving up variations of hand-rolls and sashimi.
Cuisine: Japanese, temaki bar
Tel: +852 2662 2269 Address: Shops G&H, G/F, Hollywood Centre, 77-91 Queens’s Road West, Sheung Wan
YakiniKuu $$
No-frills yakiniku and a fun overall experience at valued prices. A last-minute dinner spot that always delivers - if you're OK with the smoky barbecue stench in your hair and clothes after.
Cuisine: Japanese, BBQ Tel: +852 2331 3805 Address: Basement, 29-31 Gough Street, Central
Yardbird $$$
Does this need any introduction? Delicious selection of yakitori, including all the body parts like chicken skin, tail, heart, liver, thigh and more, as well as the famous meatball dunked in egg yolk and yakiniku-tare. Don't forget to order specials like the katsu-sando and smoked fish fried rice, as the non-yakitori dishes are great too.
Cuisine: Japanese, yakitori
Tel: +852 2547 9273
Address: G/F, 154-158 Wing Lok Street, Sheung Wan
Queen Hollywood $$$
My favourite cosy date night spot with the bf. I love the homey feeling of this restaurant, with the same high-energy server and the one Japanese chef in the kitchen. Expect daily-changing wa-fu (Japanese-style) pastas like mentaiko (cod roe) and whitebait, with bagna cauda and Japanese tomato with volcanic rock salt. We always over-order, because everything is so good.
Cuisine: Japanese Italian Tel: +852 2559 6077 Address: G/F, 258 Hollywood Rd, Sheung Wan
Okra Bar $$$$
The G/F is a lively izakaya, and upstairs is an omakase sushi counter. The omakase features in-house preserved vegetables and 10-12 pieces of fish in various states of ageing, freshwater eel, soup, dessert and seasonal fruit. All by talented chef Max Levy, a western chef who trained extensively in Japan.
Cuisine: Japanese, sushi, tasting menu
Tel: +852 2806 1038
Address: 1/F, 110 Queen's Rd W, Sai Ying Pun
Tate Dining Room & Bar $$$$
A gorgeous Chinese-French fine dining restaurant by Asia's Best Female Chef 2015 Vicky Lau. Her design background is absolutely evident by the picturesque dishes that come out in the tasting menu, each more unique than the last. Here is somewhere to take the friend / date with the refined palate who wants something unique. Read my full review of TATE's autumn menu here.
Cuisine: Chinese French
Tel: +852 2555 2172
Address: G/F-1/F, 210 Hollywood Road, Central
Frantzen's Kitchen $$$$
A tasting menu experience by three-Michelin-starred chef Bjorn Frantzen. Enjoy table or counter seating in a Scandinavian-styled space that makes you feel like you're far away from Hong Kong. You've probably seen their signature dish all over Insta - the "French Toast" with balsamic vinegar, truffles and aged cheese.
Cuisine: Nordic fusion
Tel: +852 2559 8508 Address: 11 Upper Station St, Sheung Wan
UMI on Hollywood Road $$$$
For the Edo-style sushi omakase experience in Sheung Wan, seating only 10 guests at a time.
Cuisine: Japanese, sushi
Tel: +852 2956 3177
Address: Shop 3, G/F, 159 Hollywood Road, Hong Kong
Ronin $$$$
Another restaurant by the powerhouses behind Yardbird, Ronin is the more elusive sister venue that specialises in premium produce like wagyu sukiyaki and market-fish sashimi. It's hard to find, FYI. I added this under the highest price point because the bill tends to add up to over 800 per person, including drinks.
Cuisine: Japanese, modern izakaya
Tel: +852 2547 5263 Address: G/F 8 On Wo Lane, Sheung Wan (closed Sunday)
