[Hong Kong] Afternoon tea at The Butterfly Room

I hear the Rosewood's The Butterfly Room is currently Hong Kong's hardest afternoon tea experience to book, with reservations filling up within minutes of opening. The flow here is a little different from the traditional three-tiered afternoon teas, as The Butterfly Room serves the menu in elegant courses and provides more flexibility in dessert options with the use of seasonal pastry trolleys rather than a pre-set menu.

They also offer an a la carte menu that you can order from, and of course J got a random side of black angus steak tartare and truffle fries.

The first course, "savoury canapes", consisted of a pretty display of salmon and ikura with cream cheese, ham sandwich, pork puff, crab toast, quiche and foie gras lollipop.

The second course was the "elegant surprise", which I'm guessing changes on the daily depending on the chef. This was a vegetarian layered sandwich presented like a slice of cake, with different coloured bread flavours with fillings of tomato, capsicum and avocado, and a slightly overpowering tartar sauce on the side.

The third course was "freshly baked delicacies", aka the anticipated plate of scones and an added bonus of fluffy mini madeleines. The buttery scones were indulgent and delicious, and not too sweet. The homemade orange marmalade, strawberry jam and clotted cream made for the perfect accompaniments.

Next came the "pastry trolley", laden with incredible dessert options such as the seasonal apple tart and napoleon. We made the mistake of piling too high with these beautifully fluffy, crispy, flaky tarts to be able to really savour the next trolley full of chocolates - so be warned about overindulging.

The final course is all chocolate. The "confectionery trolley" presents mountains of chocolate-inspired desserts, from the boozy chocolate cake to the homemade chocolate bon bons. So much respect to the pastry chef behind the desserts at The Butterfly Room, because each and every creation was truly as delicious as it was beautiful.
